Energy measures expected to be adopted in coming weeks

Measures regarding energy prices must be approved in the coming weeks, Prime Minister Eduard Heger said following the Government meeting on Monday. "These measures must be approved in the coming weeks. We're preparing legislation for the September session of Parliament, which will be approved in a fast-tracked legislative procedure. The Government will discuss the legislation next week, when the session of Parliament begins," said the premier. According to him, there was a shift at the Cabinet meeting on energy. At the beginning of the year, the government signed a memorandum with Slovak Power Plants, which was supposed to cap electricity prices at around 61 euros per megawatt-hour. Richard Sulík, the minister of economy who has submitted his resignation, pointed out that due to the huge increase in electricity prices on the world markets, the resulting amount would be slightly higher. Originally, an increase of around 20 percent was envisaged. The current estimate speaks of a 50 percent increase. At the same time, the Slovak Association of Heat Producers is calling on the government to consider and reconsider its proposals in order to ensure the quality and price of electricity and gas supplies. These are intended to mitigate the impact of extremely high electricity and gas prices on households. According to the heat producers, the government has completely ignored helping the 761 thousand households, or 40 per cent of Slovakia's population.
