Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová said that if ministers for the Freedom and Solidarity party (SaS) leave the government, it will be her priority to consider candidates who would replace them. "Slovakia is entering critical times and needs a functional government,” said Čaputová, adding that she sees no reason to prolong the current agony in connection with the government crisis. The president approves the departure of Economy Minister Richard Sulík (SaS) and said she does not understand calls from the major governing Ordinary People party that he should not leave the government, as the party criticises him at the same time. Sulík handed in his resignation on August 31. The remaining ministers for Freedom and Solidarity (Justice Minister Mária Kolíková, Education Minister Branislav Gröhling and Foreign Affairs Minister Ivan Korčok) said they would resign on Monday. SaS announced it would leave the government after Finance Minister Igor Matovič refused to resign. His departure from the government was the party’s condition for remaining a part of the coalition.
