Celebrations mark 30th anniversary of Slovak Constitution

The Slovak Constitution most of all needs a change in approach, and very urgently so, as even now, 30 years after its adoption, Slovakia is still some way off from being a mature democracy with a high level of the rule of law. This according to President Zuzana Caputova who was speaking at a ceremonial session held by Parliament on Thursday to mark the 30th anniversary of the Constitution's adoption. "In terms of the level of political culture, even 30 years after the adoption of our Constitution, we are still quite far from being able to call ourselves a mature democracy with a high level of the rule of law in which the constitution enjoys natural respect and its observance is taken for granted. Sometimes I even have a feeling that we are rather going in the opposite direction in terms of our attitude towards to the Constitution and the protection of constitutionality," said the president.
