Smer-SD leader urges president to act on referendum

During the ceremonial House session to mark the 30th anniversary of the Slovak Constitution, Smer-SD leader and ex-premier Robert Fico appealed to President Zuzana Caputova in connection with the referendum his party is proposing on a snap general election. Fico underlined in his speech that the Constitution entrusts state power into the hands of the people of Slovakia. "Give the people what they are entitled to in line with the Slovak Constitution," said Fico, who reminded the president of her duty to ensure that constitutional bodies function properly. Caputova was dismissive of Fico's call, however. "I don't need such messages or encouragements from Robert Fico. I know how to act. I've been acting and will act in accordance with the Constitution," said the head of state.
