The anniversary of Dubček's car accident

The anniversary of Dubček's car accident

On Thursday 1 September, it was thirty years since Alexander Dubček, then chairman of the Social Democratic Party and member of the Federal Assembly, was thrown from a car he was travelling in when it crashed near Humpolec in the Czech Republic. As a result of his injuries he died two months after the accident. Although foul play was suspected, the crash was later officially ruled to be an accident. As a member of the already ending joint Czech-Slovak parliament, he often commuted between Bratislava and Prague. Dubček was one of Slovakia’s most famous politicians, as well as a leader of the revival process from 1968 and a prominent face of the post-November development. He is buried in the Bratislava cemetery in the Slavicie udolie.
