Smer-SD leader calls on president to declare referendum immediately

Head of the opposition Smer-SD party Robert Fico on Wednesday called on President Zuzana Caputova to announce a referendum immediately with both questions that were recently supported by 406,000 people in a referendum petition initiated by Smer. This according to Smer spokesman Jan Mazgut, who was speaking with TASR news agency. Fico did so in reaction to OLaNO's proposal presented on the same day concerning the departure of its leader Igor Matovic from the post of finance minister, as demanded by Freedom and Solidarity. According to the Smer head, only a direct democratic solution can lead the country out of an unprecedented government crisis that has been caused by political "kids". The proposed referendum questions are aimed at triggering a snap general election in the country. The first question asks whether people agree that the incumbent Government should resign immediately, with the second asking whether the public agrees that an early termination of the parliamentary electoral term can be carried out via a referendum or a resolution of Parliament.
