Opposition hands over 406,000 signatures to trigger referendum

Representatives of the opposition Smer-SD party and petition committee members on Wednesday delivered 406,000 signatures to the Presidential Palace aimed at triggering a referendum on the fall of the Government and a change in the Slovak Constitution. The opposition wants to initiate a snap election through the referendum. The referendum should involve two questions, with the first asking whether people agree that the incumbent Government should resign immediately and whether an early termination of the parliamentary electoral term can be carried out via a referendum or a resolution of Parliament amending the Constitution. Previously, President Zuzana Caputova stated that she'll approach the Constitutional Court concerning the question on the Government's immediate resignation to have it examine its constitutionality. Justice Minister Maria Kolikova stated on Wednesday that she also finds the questions problematic from the constitutional point of view. On this note, however, the minister noted that she understands the debate and concerns about legislatively enshrining the possibility of a snap election via a referendum.
