As the current extreme drought is wrecking farmers' crops, the Slovak Land Fund wants to give them a helping hand by reducing rents, fund representative Peter Tarasovic reported on Thursday. The fund’s managers are currently mapping preliminary interest among farmers who have been deprived of their crops by drought. The farmers can express their interest in receiving aid until the end of August. Tarasovic explained that the ongoing wave of extreme drought has caused a disaster of unprecedented proportions in Slovakia. Some farmers are reporting a drop in harvested crops of more than 50 percent. The Slovak Land Fund has decided to accommodate its tenants and is looking for a way to compensate them. "Our aim is to reduce or completely forgive rents for farmers who have been deprived of their crops by this extreme drought. The law allows us to do that," claimed fund general manager Jan Marosz, referring to a piece of legislation dating back to 2003.
