Electricity price in Slovakia breaking new records

The growth in electricity prices in Slovakia continues at an extremely rapid pace. Electricity for Slovakia to be supplied next year was available on the Prague Energy Exchange (PXE) at €504 per megawatt hour (MWh) on Monday, August 15, after breaking the psychological threshold of €400/MWh only on August 1. A year ago, electricity was being traded at some €70/MWh. Germany and Hungary have reported similar record prices. Electricity prices are rising due to concerns over whether enough electricity will be generated in Europe during the coming winter season, as countries in the region have been struggling with gas shortages caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Another factor is nuclear capacity outages in France, which will limit the possibility of French electricity exports in the coming months, as well as high temperatures and drought on the continent. The prices of natural gas in Europe have continued to grow as well.
