Scrapping the national veto in the EU decision-making processes is a red line for the Smer-SD party, Smer-SD chair Robert Fico declared on Monday. "Big Western leaders don't realize the danger to which they're exposing the future of the whole EU, if they don’t instantly stop the discussion on the potential scrapping of the national veto," stated Fico. According to him, the national veto holds an enormous importance in everyday life, adding that Smer-SD is in favour of such a strong EU in which the members show each other respect. German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz has also spoken about the veto. In the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he supports a more united and geopolitical European Union. In his view, if the European Union wants to be taken seriously by the world of rival superpowers, it cannot afford to allow individual member states to use the power of veto in the area of foreign policy.
