The Vrba Wetzler Memorial march from the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland to Žilina was completed by more than 40 people after two years. The march follows the roughly 130-kilometre route of two Slovak Jews, Rudolf Vrba (Walter Rosenberg) and Alfred Wetzler who fled the concentration camp during WWII.
After their arrival, they dictated a 32-page report of life in the concentration camp to Jewish leaders in Žilina in April 1944. According to Peter Švec from the Slovak branch of the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem, their report is considered one of the most important documents of the Second World War. "It is a message to me that one should not give up and tell the truth. It is a message to the public to listen, to observe, to evaluate not only on the basis of superficial phenomena and pressures. But let us also engage character. Because these two men were very courageous and had a moral compass," said Švec.
