The number of hospital admissions in 2021 was the lowest in the past 20 years, according to statistics by the National Health Information Centre (NCZI). In total, state health-care facilities recorded 942,376 admissions last year, with the average stay lasting 6.5 days. On the other hand, the total number of deaths of hospitalized patients increased by 35.7% (to 42,411) when compared to 2020, adding that it includes patients who succumbed to COVID-19.
Hospitalised patients requiring the longest treatment were those with mental and behavioural disorders, while patients suffering from eye illnesses were released most rapidly. The most common reasons for admissions were cardiovascular diseases (14.6%), cancer (10.2%) and respiratory diseases (9.8%). The largest proportion of these patients consisted of people aged 55-74 (34.1%). In terms of regions, the highest number of hospital admissions in 2021 was recorded in Bratislava region, followed by Trnava region.
