Food production and river rafting impacted by drought

The current drought has significantly affected the current state of Slovakia’s corn crop, with farmers in Zvolen expecting a 50 to 60 percent drop in production. This according to the director of the Regional Chamber of Agriculture and Food (RPPK) based in Zvolen, Branislav Horniak. He added that there is a danger that firms in the business of animal production will not be able to provide nutrition for the animals, especially given another aggravating factor, that hay production is also in severe decline with vegetation on the meadows being completely dry. Another impact of the drought is being felt on the Ipeľ river, where rafting which has been in operation for over six years has now become impossible due to the extremely low levels of water in the river basin. This in contrast to previous years in which there were almost no obstacles to rafting and boats were on the water every weekend.
