Interior Minister Roman Mikulec on Monday welcomed home a group of Slovak firefighters who have returned from Slovenia. From Thursday 21 July they were helping to extinguish a large forest fire in the country. "We are delighted that you've made it back home safe and sound," the minister told the firefighters. Head of the Firefighter and Rescue Corps Pavol Mikulášek noted on the occasion that this was the third time Slovak firefighters were dispatched on a mission abroad, and the first time they were deployed in a foreign country along with Slovak soldiers. He also pointed out that Slovakia is also threatened by forest fires.
“I hope that citizens will listen to us and realise the danger of fires. It is essential to observe the measures related to the increased risk of fire in forests and woodlands. Just go to the websites of the district fire department directorates across the country. People can find there all the necessary information, recommendations and restrictions.”
In the district of Nové Zámky there is a ban on entering the forests, with the authorities justifying this by referring to the enormous danger of fires. The regulation is also currently in force in the Košice district, where a forest fire is currently breaking out. Firefighters have had to extinguish a fire in Slovenský raj. Although the fire was in a difficult-to-access location, they managed to get it under control.
