In June 2022, the Railway Company Slovakia state carrier (ŽSSK) transported the most paying passengers since the introduction of free transport for children, youth and pensioners in 2014, according to company’s spokesman Tomáš Kováč. The record figures were reached by ŽSSK's return to the Bratislava - Dunajská Streda - Komárno line, significant restrictions on car transport in Hlohovec and Interrail discounts in international transport. The company also recorded an increase in paying passengers on the line section Štrbské Pleso - Štrba. Last month, ŽSSK's commercially operated IC trains accounted for 82.5% of the volume of passengers transported in June 2019.
According to ŽSSK CEO Roman Koreň, the company is also preparing for the new 2022/2023 timetable, which should bring about a 5% increase in the number of trains and train-kilometres dispatched compared to today. "There will be significant changes on some lines. Of course, like any timetable, this one will not suit every passenger or municipality, but next year we are again planning, if the coronavirus and the state of the infrastructure allow, a further increase in passengers and revenue," added Koreň.
