On Wednesday, the European Commision called on its members to coordinate a reduction gas consumption in Europe by 15 percent during the winter and to accelerate work on the diversification of energy imports. This is to prepare for the “likely scenario” that Russia could cut off the flow to Europe. The Commission's legislative proposal will be a subject of talks by member states.
The Slovak Government Office in reaction to this proposal assured that Slovakia is taking all the necessary steps to ensure that it has enough gas not only now, but also during the heating season. The country's reservoirs have been filled up to more than 40 percent of the annual consumption. In addition, Slovakia has also signed contracts on alternative gas supplies.
"We've already replaced more than 60 percent of Russian gas from other sources and we continue with our diversification," stressed the Government Office in its statement for the TASR news agency. For example, the infrastructure for new possibilities of gas transport to Slovakia via the Slovak-Polish gas pipeline has been completed. The office also pointed to the investment in renewable energy sources and reducing the energy intensity of buildings. EU economy ministers are due to discuss the measures on cutting gas dependency on July 26.
