At the age of 76 novelist, essayist, literary critic, poet, scientist and musician Ivan Kadlečík has died. Because of his open views which he maintained even after the Soviet occupation in 1968, Kadlečík belonged to a group of “undesirable” novelists, with his work being declared unpublishable during the Communist regime.
Such essays and media criticism had him disallowed from writing such essays, something he could only return to after 1998. Ivan Kadlečík was born the son of a Lutheran pastor in Modra on April 8, 1938. He studied at Comenius University in Bratislava, before working as a journalist in Košice for the Pravda newspaper. In the 70s and 80s he authored more autobiographical themes and poetry. In 1990 he began working at the Institute of Literature within the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava, and since May of 2004, he had been a corresponding member of the literary section of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts.
