Commemorating Sovereignty Declaration

The adoption of the Declaration of Sovereignty of the Slovak Republic was an important political step towards Slovak statehood, President Zuzana Caputova stated on Sunday. She was speaking on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the passing of the document. As she stated, it is worth reminding the public that by approving the declaration, Parliament committed itself to respect the democratic and humanist legacies of Europe, which the country has been fulfilling by being a member of the EU.
According to the President, it is important to remember the foundations of statehood. At the same time she added that “today, when we face so many crises, we must focus all the more on coping with them. To make the Slovak Republic a successful, modern state and, above all, a safe and peaceful home for its people," the president stressed.

Parliamentary Chair Boris Kollar finds the day of the passing of the Declaration of Sovereignty of the Slovak Republic one of the most important ones in Slovakia's recent history. As he stated on Sunday, the document paved the way for the adoption of the Slovak Constitution and the peaceful division of the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic into two separate and friendly states. "Sovereignty must always be fought for, because states that enter into contractual relations or state unions, such as the European Union, [cede part of their sovereignty]," he said. According to Kollar, Slovakia must retain one hundred percent of its sovereignty when it comes to certain matters, such as cultural identity, ethical issues, and the right to decide who can immigrate to the country, for instance.
