Slovaks most trust public service television and radio with 41 percent trusting them according to the recently published Eurobarometer survey of the media habits of citizens, their trust in various media sources and their attitude to disinformation. Newspapers and their websites have the trust of 21 percent, while 20 percent trust private television and radio stations, and 16 percent trust people, groups or friends on social networks. Fewest trust video-platforms with 12 percent and influencers on social networks with 6 percent.
More than a quarter (28 percent) of the participants in the survey, and 36 percent of Slovaks said that they were often exposed to disinformation and fake news over the last seven days. Most Europeans are confident or fairly confident that they are able to recognise disinformation or fake news. This applied to 64 percent of respondents in the whole EU and 70 percent in Slovakia.
Television is preferred by 73 percent of the respondents as their primary source of news. It is followed by radio, mentioned by 44 percent of Slovaks, on-line news platforms with 37 percent, and social media or blogs with 25 percent. Newspapers and magazines came fifth, mentioned by only 13 percent as their main source of news.
The survey was carried out by the Ipsos European Public Affairs company around the turn of May and June, using a sample of over 52 thousand citizens of the European Union.
