Salary hikes in state administration

Employees in the state administration or public institutions will see two salary hikes over the next year: by 7 percent in January 2023 and 10 percent in September 2023.

The Justice Ministry announced in its social network post on Thursday that judiciary employees as well as members of the Prison and Court Guard Service will see salary hikes. In 2023, two salary hikes are planned which are likely to increase the salaries by €150 in total. In addition, employees will also receive the one-time bonus of €500. The one-time bonus of €500 will also be paid to police officers, firefighters and mountain rescuers, TASR was told by Interior Ministry spokesperson Zuzana Eliasova on Thursday. No specific deal on salary hikes for health personnel has been clinched yet, with talks due to continue also on August 9, Prime Minister Eduard Heger declared after his meeting with health unionists representing doctors, nurses and midwives on Thursday. The unionists see the talks in a positive light.

“It's an important matter as to whether the salary increases in education will be continued in 2024 by a similar amount”, Slovak Teachers Chamber president Vladimir Crmoman told TASR in response to the agreed increase in salaries in education. He pointed out that the increase does not mean that the coalition has kept its pre-election promises. "When we compare how this Government has sought to increase salaries in education over its entire period with the previous government, it lags significantly behind," stated Crmoman, adding that it is not possible to speak about making the teaching profession more attractive, but rather about catching up with inflation and the increase in the cost of living.
According to the Slovak Teachers Chamber president, this year is critical, and the agreed increase in salaries in education will not put a halt to the exodus of teachers from the education system.

Prime Minister Eduard Heger and Finance Minister Igor Matovic on Wednesday (July 13) presented the results of negotiations between the Government and trade unions. A sum of €1 billion will be used to increase the salaries of employees in state and public service, including education staff. Salaries in education are set to rise by 10 percent as of January 1, 2023. Subsequently, as of September 2023, the increase will be 12 percent. Staff will also receive a one-off bonus of €500 in the autumn of this year.
