About 25 Slovaks are involved in the ATLAS experiment run by the European Organisation for Nuclear Reseach (CERN), which discovered the Higgs boson particle in 2012, the spokesperson of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) Katarína Gáliková said on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Higgs particle's discovery. She said that the Slovak groups are from the SAV's Institute of Experimental Physics in Košice and Comenius University's Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics in Bratislava. The Higgs boson is an elementary particle that plays a role in the Higgs mechanism. "The mechanism forms a part of the Standard Model or the mathematical description of properties of elementary particles and three out of four elementary forces in the universe. The Higgs mechanism is a theoretical description of the way elementary particles acquire mass," added Gáliková.
