Nearly three in five - 58 percent - are convinced that the country’s NATO membership is a guarantee of security for the country, according to a survey that Focus conducted for the Public Affairs Institute (IVO).
The poll gathered views from a sample of 1,000 Slovaks between April and June. As many as 59 percent of Slovaks think that if Russia attacked any NATO country, Slovakia and fellow NATO-member states would be obliged to come to that country's defence. “One quarter of people don't see any guarantee of security in our NATO membership and are against the commitment to become involved in defending a fellow NATO-member country were it to be attacked,” said IVO. Forty-six percent of those asked agreed that in light of the crisis involving Russia and Ukraine there's a need to bolster NATO’s military presence in Central and Eastern European countries.
