One in five Slovaks earns less than €500

One in five Slovaks who has a full-time employment earned less than €500 per month last year, even though the average salary in Slovakia was €824 in 2013, Poštová Banka analysis of figures from the Statistics Office shows.

It was women in particular who had such low salaries, as 24 percent of them earned under €500 last year. The same was true for one in six men, said the bank’s analyst Dana Vrabcova. “Low salaries occur frequently with newcomers to the labour market,” said Vrabcova. More than one half of employees aged 19 or less and one in three of those between 20 and 24 years of age earned less than €500. The lowest share of low-earners was among people in their 30s. In terms of education, people with only primary education were found to be most likely to have such low wages.
