Education Minister Branislav Groehling proposed on Monday that the salaries of education employees as of July 1 or September 1 be raised by ten percent, and as of January 1, 2023 by another ten percent. He added that the proposal is still to be discussed. According to Groehling, Labour Minister Milan Krajniak also expressed his support for the September levelling up.
According to the education minister, a meeting will take place these days that will be attended by Prime Minister Eduard Heger and Finance Minister Igor Matovic, as well as by the labour minister and the education minister. They will address the issue of the salaries of employees in the public and state administration.
"We'll see how the debate ends up," stated Groehling, who said a few days ago that a three-percent increase in school staff salaries as of July 1 is financially covered and a further increase is being negotiated.
The education minister reiterated that higher tax collection should be a source for covering the higher salaries. According to him, the state should first assess its costs and only then consider raising taxes. "They'll hit everyone. If we have other resources, let's use those," he said. Finance Minister Igor Matovic is proposing a ten-percent increase in the salaries of education employees through tax increases.
