The new president Andrej Kiska’s first steps have had an impact on improving the quality of democracy in Slovakia, said the Institute for Public Affairs (IVO) on Thursday.
“As expected, the first steps taken by the new president were in the direction of reducing the concentration of power in the hands of one political party and went towards strengthening the mechanisms of the separation of powers and 'checks and balances'”, said IVO representatives at a press conference in Bratislava while presenting the results of the IVO Barometer survey. In the latest survey, the level of democracy in Slovakia in the second quarter of 2014 received an average mark of 3.1, which is a slight improvement of 0.1 points when compared to the previous period. Grigorij Mesežnikov from IVO also welcomed the president's activities in the area of the judiciary, feeling that it's good that Kiska acted quickly in terms of appointing or not appointing new constitutional judges.
