This year's harvest is promising, Prime Minister Robert Fico said after meeting farmers in the district of Komárno (Nitra region) on Thursday. The premier, Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Ľubomír Jahnátek and chairman of the Slovak Agricultural and Food Chamber (SPPK) Milan Semančík paid a visit to a farm in Sokolce to learn more about the situation with this year's crops.
According to Fico, while the fact that the harvest is set to be good may exert downward pressure on commodity prices, this doesn't automatically mean that producers and traders should cut their prices. As far as the farm in Sokolce is concerned, the prime minister praised the fact that the farm has maintained a broad scope of agricultural production; in other words, that the farm isn't focused solely on crop production but that it's also devoted to animal production while seeking ways to be closer to consumers. Fico said that his visit was designed to lend major support to farmers, and he stressed the need to reach the highest possible degree of food security.
