Slovaks receive European Heritage Label

The two-day European Heritage Label award ceremony opened in Brussels on Monday. The European Commission and an expert jury awarded the label to twelve places that have an important position in Europe's history and culture. For the first time, Slovakia also received the label. The award was given for the medieval sacral architecture depicted in 12 Gothic churches in the Gemer and Malohont regions. They were particularly interested in the unique collection of medieval wall paintings. According to Anna Tuhárská from the Monuments Office of the Slovak Republic, these are exceptional proof of the international character of European art and of the lively cultural contacts across Europe in the distant past. The Brussels event was opened by the European Commissioner for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture, Marija Gabrielová. She noted that in order to promote the European Year of Youth, participant discussions will be held on the role that youth can play in safeguarding the EU's cultural heritage.
