Slovakia to be part of UN Economic and Social Council

Slovakia was elected a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in New York, USA on Friday. It will operate in this international body as of January 1, 2023 for a period of three years. "In a time of economic crisis and growing food and energy insecurity in the world, Slovakia's election to ECOSOC is an opportunity to actively contribute to the debate on sustainable post-pandemic recovery and the role of the international community in the reconstruction of Ukraine," said Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Ivan Korcok. He also confirmed the readiness of Slovak diplomacy to be fully involved in shaping the United Nations development programmes.
ECOSOC is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. The last time Slovakia was part of it was in 2010-2012. It is a 54-member body aimed at economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainable development and Agenda 2030. ECOSOC currently also focuses on the negative impacts of the war in Ukraine.
