Smer-SD files no-confidence motion in Economy Minister Sulík

On Thursday, the opposition Smer-SD party submitted a no-confidence motion in Economy Minister Richard Sulik (Freedom and Solidarity) over his alleged fiasco vis-a-vis the EU embargo on Russian oil and the subsequent damaging of Slovakia's interests. In addition to Smer-SD representatives, the proposal was also signed by independent MPs Tomáš Taraba, Štefan Kuffa and Filip Kuffa, who were elected to Parliament as part of the far-right People’s Party Our Slovakia. Speaker of Parliament Boris Kollár (We Are Family) has seven days to convene the extraordinary session.

The MPs justified their proposal by Sulík's passivity in submitting proposals to mitigate the effects of rising energy and fuel prices. According to them, the minister's inaction is resulting in an uncontrollable rise in energy and fuel prices with drastic effects on living standards. "The decisive moment that led the group of MPs to submit their proposal was the absolute ignoring of Slovak national economic interests at the last European Council at which EU leaders adopted further sanctions against Russia, including importing and processing Russian oil," stated the MPs.
