Municipal and regional elections will be held in October

The municipal and regional elections will be held on October 29 in Slovakia, House Chair Boris Kollar officially announced on Monday. At a press conference, Kollar claimed that placing the date of elections near to the All Souls Day public holiday was the outcome of an agreement within the coalition. According to him, many people travel far from their permanent residences for the holidays, and it's quite likely that they wouldn't be willing to do so two weekends in a row. The coalition thus hopes to see a higher voter turnout because of this. Kollar pointed out that finances are being saved by linking the two elections together. In the autumn, voters are to elect city, town and village mayors as well as local councillors. Bratislava and Kosice will also see the election of borough mayors and local councillors. In addition, people in Slovakia will elect regional governors and regional councillors. Foreigners with permanent residence in Slovakia can also vote or be elected. According to the daily Sme, more than 150 thousand foreigners lived in Slovakia last year.
