Vice-Premier meets with Belarus opposition leader

Vice-premier and Investment and Informatisation Minister Veronika Remisova met with Belarus dissident and opposition leader in exile Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya on the sidelines of the Globsec Bratislava Forum 2022 on Thursday. The two discussed the war in Ukraine and the situation prevailing in Belarus. Remisova confirmed that the Belarus nation enjoys the full support of Slovakia in its fight for freedom. Earlier on Thursday, Remisova gave a speech at the forum in Bratislava. She said that each European country needs its own efficient instrument, aside from the European legislative, to eliminate malicious disinformation content circulating on social media and online. "Social networks make billions today also from the dissemination of hatred and disinformation, without bearing any responsibility. It's not acceptable to have a single fact-checker assigned for the whole Slovak Facebook network," said Remisova.

Remisova pointed out that the malignant role of the disinformation campaigns was apparent in the US 2016 presidential race, Brexit referendum but also the annexation of Crimea. Even though the freedom of speech is sacred to her, she added that practical experiences with social media indicate that there should be a limit to everything. The world has gone on for too long ignoring the floating of lies, hoaxes and propaganda, for which the social networks are breeding grounds.
In this context, Remisova also met with European Commissioner for Digital Skills Margharethe Vestager on the sidelines of Globsec to discuss the regulation model at the national level with respect to the implementation of European legislation in the digital sphere.
