Member of Parliament György Gyimesi of the OLANO party wants to ban rainbow flags on state buildings. Together with a former member of the far-right People's Party Our Slovakia, Tomáš Taraba, they submitted a joint proposal that "symbols of movements, organizations, communities and ideologies promoting any kind of sexual orientation could not be displayed in state institutions." A violation would result in a fine of €7,000. Prime Minister Eduard Heger is calling for the proposal to be withdrawn. According to him it will further polarise society, which Slovakia does not need. The prime minister pointed out that the bill contradicts coalition rules. The proposal was not submitted with the consent of the coalition council or the OLANO party's parliamentary club, and it was submitted in cooperation with an opposition MP. OLANO party leader Igor Matovič considers the bill appropriate, as he believes that the misuse of state buildings to promote "propaganda" of any sexual orientation is not in line with the public interest.
