EU leaders agree on partial embargo on Russian oil

EU leaders agreed late on Monday evening at an emergency summit in Brussels to impose a partial oil embargo on Russia. It applies only to Russian oil imported by sea and allows temporary exemptions for supplies via pipelines. In Slovakia, this applies to oil imports via the Družba pipeline. According to Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger, the results of the first day of the summit are good news for Slovakia: "We discussed sanctions on Russian oil and Slovakia's demands were accepted. This means that Slovakia will be able to use Russian oil until it finds a full-fledged alternative for it. The European Union has remained united, which is extremely important at this time."

Heger also praised the fact that EU leaders managed to get Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban "on board" with the embargo. The Hungarian premier indicated upon his arrival at Brussels that a compromise on a Russian oil embargo was still a long way off. Tuesday's discussions will continue with the topic of ensuring food security for Europe and the rest of the world by supporting Ukrainian wheat exports, with other issues related to building a common European security framework also on the agenda.
