Richard Sulik: more than one political post should be banned

The governing Smer-SD party’s proposal that politicians holding more than one political post should receive only one salary is a typical manifestation of pre-election populism without an attempt to resolve the actual problem, said Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) chairman Richard Sulik on Tuesday.

According to Sulik, who is an MEP, the key problem with holding multiple political offices (governor, mayor, etc.) along with a Parliamentary seat, for example, is the opportunity to obtain unjustified advantages for individual towns and villages contrary to the public interest. “Advantages come with MPs’ votes on, for example, the state budget, taxes, subsidies, or the level of the budget deficit. SaS will therefore submit to Parliament a draft amendment to the Constitution, according to which an MPs’ mandate will become incompatible with holding the posts of regional governor or deputy governor as well as mayor or deputy mayor,” announced Sulik.
