Igor Matovič proposes changes to political discussions in media

Finance Minister Igor Matovic has proposed a change to the law so as to set which politicians from which parties would be allowed to take part in TV debates. According to the proposal, only representatives of parliamentary parties should participate in the debates, with the frequency corresponding to their election results. Igor Matovič wants to have a debate on his proposal between June and September this year. According to him, some politicians are over-represented in the debates while others are tabooed, for example those with extremist views. In his view, they would cause fewer problems when confronted directly in a debate than they do on social networks. The extra-parliamentary Voice-SD party, which currently leads opinion polls, has criticised the proposal as an attempt to censor the media. The coalition partners, however, are unlikely to support Matovic's proposal. Freedom and solidarity caucus chair Anna Zemanova has told TASR that the finance minister has not won the support of coalition partners for such a plan and that they will vote against it.
