President admits mistake in bestowing state awards on White Legion members

President Zuzana Caputova admitted making a mistake in the process of assessing the state award for members of the White Legion - Anton Tunega, Albert Pucik and Eduard Tesar, declaring that she would do everything possible to ensure that similar controversies do not recur in the future. TASR was told this by Caputova's spokesman Martin Strizinec on Wednesday. The president posthumously bestowed the Order of Ludovit Stur, First Class on Tunega, Pucik and Tesar - three members of the Christian anti-communist movement who were sentenced to death during the political trials of the 1950s - for extraordinary merits for democracy and its development, human rights and freedoms and their protection. Following the award ceremony, several historians pointed to the problematic engagement of the three young men during the fascist Slovak state.
