Year-on-year (y-o-y) inflation measured by the EU's Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) amounted to 10.9 percent in April 2022, following the 9.6 percent seen in March 2022, the Statistics Office reported on Wednesday. Monthly harmonised inflation reached 1.4 percent in April, as compared to the 1.7 percent posted in March 2021 and 0.2 percent in April 2021. The average harmonised inflation rate for the 12-month period ending in April 2022 amounted to 5.5 percent, increasing by 0.8 percentage points (p.p.) as compared to March. This indicator is important in terms of assessing price stability within a country. The monthly HICP in April 2022 was mainly influenced by increases in the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages (0.56 p.p.), transport (0.30 p.p.), housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (0.12 p.p.), furniture, household equipment and common household maintenance (0.12 p.p.), miscellaneous goods and services (0.10 p.p.) and restaurants and hotels (0.05 p.p.).
