The government is planning to approve an amendment to the Slovak constitution and prohibit the export of drinking, mineral and geothermal water beyond the borders of Slovakia. As Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico claims this is the first time that the government is focusing on the protection of water resources.
This amendment drafted by the Environment Ministry defines water as a strategic natural resource and its export should only be after the government allows it. The prohibition will affect the export of water via cisterns, not bottled water. The opposition criticizes the draft.
