The percentage of gross domestic product that Slovakia spent on health care in 2012 again did not reach the average of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). While total health care spending in Slovakia totalled at 8.1 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), the average in OECD countries was around 9.3 percent.
This stems from the OECD Health Data 2014 report, which is based on figures from 2012. Slovakia thus lagged behind the OECD average by 1.2 percentage points. “The Slovak Republic has recorded a very high increase in health care spending in the years preceding the economic crisis, far above the OECD average. Spending growth in Slovakia finally slowed and in the years 2010 and 2011 dropped in real terms,” writes the OECD report, whereby the situation began to change in 2012 and expenditures increased in real terms by about four percent.
