“Without respect for the media, we cannot talk about a mature society.” This according to Prime Minister Eduard Heger, who was writing on a social network on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day. At the same time, he called on both opposition and coalition politicians to treat the media with respect, because their vocabulary is a mirror on society. "This attitude should be mandatory equipment for every politician or public figure, because the role of the media is not to serve us. Their job is to shape public opinion, to question and evaluate our service to the country," Heger said. Slovakia ranks 27th in the media freedom rankings, up eight places as compared to last year. Pavol Szalai of Reporters without borders sees the reversal of the acquittal of Marian Kočner, the drafting of media laws, and fewer verbal attacks from government officials as reasons for this.
