The European Commission has received a letter signed by a group of Slovak lawmakers, the Commission spokesperson confirmed to TASR in response to the question of whether European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has received a letter sent to her by former Slovak premier Robert Fico over criminal charges he faces in Slovakia.
"We don't make comments on intrastate investigations carried out by national law enforcement bodies. In general, the European Commission is not invested with the powers to interfere with individual cases at the national level," stated the spokesperson.
The reply also notes that the European Commission closely monitors developments in Slovakia and this will be reflected in its upcoming 2022 Report on the Rule of Law. Fico and his former interior minister Robert Kalinak (2012-18) face charges of founding, orchestrating and supporting a criminal group, misuse of a public official's powers and repeated violation of tax confidentiality. Fico rejects the charges, claiming them to be a "pure political vendetta".
