Charged former PM Fico refuses to testify, in conflict with EU Commissioner Jourová

Slovak MP and former PM Robert Fico, currently charged of masterminding a criminal group and misusing of powers, refused to testify at the police station, on Tuesday. His defence lawyer, David Lindtner, claims that they did not understand the accusation and asked the investigator to explain it to them.

Moreover, on Monday, Fico criticised the statements of EU Justice Commissioner Věra Jourová. Jourová criticised Fico for his letter to European politicians - in partucular the fact that he called President Zuzana Čaputová an "American mistress". Fico claims that Jourová "loves" Slovak Finance Minister Igor Matovič, Special Prosecutor Daniel Lipšic and Čaputová. Fico said that therefore he is not surprised that Jourová "has not once reacted to the total disintegration of justice in Slovakia." In the letter, Fico also wrote that charges against him represent "an unprecedented attack on the opposition, aimed at deposing (him) the leader of the opposition and putting him in custody at any cost".

Former Slovak Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák, facing the same charges, is already in custody. As Fico is currently an MP, he can only be remanded in custody after approval by the Parliament. The Parliament should deal with this case on Thursday.
