President Zuzana Caputova awarded the Order of the Double White Cross to former Italian prime minister and head of the European Commission Romano Prodi at the Slovak Embassy in Rome on Thursday. Prodi stood at the helm of the European Commission when Slovakia joined the EU in 2004. Caputova emphasised that he advocated the enlargement of the Union even when not all member states shared this vision at that time. Because of this, Caputova decided to give him the award for his outstanding merits in the process of Slovakia's integration into the EU. "By awarding this state decoration, I want to recognise, on behalf of the Slovak public, the role you played in favour of Slovakia and its accession to the Union," she said.
