Prime Minister: “There's no danger of food shortages in Slovakia”

“The people of Slovakia don't have to worry about food shortages or shortages of resources to produce foods”, Prime Minister Eduard Heger declared in Nitra on Wednesday. According to him, Slovakia has significant surpluses of grain, 168 per cent of what it consumes, hence there is enough for exports, too. The same holds true for oil-seed rape. On the other hand, Slovakia has lower self-sufficiency in the sphere of fruits, vegetables and livestock products. The Government wants to prevent speculative increases in profits, which is why the Ministry of Agriculture is monitoring food prices and reserves in stock for individual stores. It has also concluded a deal with retailers to maintain stable prices for 13 essential foods.
