Arms supplies from EU member states to Ukraine are a "fundamental prerequisite" in order to prevent the accomplishment of the goals pursued by Russian aggression, chief of Slovak diplomacy Ivan Korcok stated after a session of the EU's Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg on Monday. As he said, the arms supplies from a total of 17 EU countries are not aimed at prolonging the war. "They're rather a fundamental prerequisite to make sure that the goals of the Russian aggression are not met, meaning literally to bring Ukraine down to its knees," said Korcok. He added that Slovakia's decision to support Ukrainian anti-air defence was received positively by the Council of the EU.
The foreign affairs ministers also discussed the building of ties with other partners, including countries of the Western Balkans and those in the south-eastern neighbourhood of the EU. "It's important that these countries stand by us because the aggression also concerns them," added Korcok, pointing out that countries of the Western Balkans are attempting to gain EU membership and meet the conditions for it. "The decision must finally be taken and talks initiated, particularly with North Macedonia and Albania."
