The Christian Democrat party (KDH) has repeatedly approached Parliament with a proposal to close shops on Sundays and public holidays. According to Christian Democrat chairman Ján Figeľ, unless it is necessary, working on Sunday is a sign of poverty, not wealth. Figeľ stated at a press conference on Tuesday that people deserve Sunday as a day off.
“In Slovakia, people work on Sundays more than in most of the EU countries. More than 19 percent of individuals work on Sundays. This is the highest number in the European Union. These are people who are missing out on Sunday at the family table. It is every fifth citizen”, said Figeľ. Slovakia’s parliament has already amended the Labour Code so that an employee cannot be forced to work on Jan. 1, Easter Sunday, December 24 after midday, and Christmas Day.
