Easter shopping to more expensive by 10% this year

This year's Easter food will cost the typical Slovak household at least 10% more than last year, according to an analysis by Eva Sadovská, an analyst of WOOD & Company. "According to the latest data from the Slovak Statistical Office, the cost of food and non-alcoholic drinks has risen by 9.6% compared to the last year," she said. Sadovská added that this year customers have to pay 26.9% more for oils and fats, 19.8% more for green vegetables, 11% more for bread and cereal products, 9.8% more for milk, cheese and eggs, 8.6% more for coffee, tea and cocoa, and 6.2% more for mineral water, non-alcoholic drinks and juices when compared to a year ago.

Sadovská noted that Easter is also associated with a higher mobility of the population and so with higher fuel consumption. "Petrol and diesel are now substantially more expensive than last year. The war in Ukraine resulted in a sharp rise in fuel prices during March. The price of petrol rose by 25.9% year-on-year, while diesel price went up by 41.5%, said Sadovská.

The average price of 95-octane petrol and diesel were over €1.7 at the beginning of April.
