Fines for speeding or using mobile telephone behind the wheel are to become more stringent, it follows from a bill approved by the Government on Wednesday. For the use of mobile telephones without hands-free mode, the fines will increase from the previous cap of €200 to €300. “Furthermore, it will be possible to impose a driving ban for this misdemeanour and violations will count as a serious misdemeanour under the three-strikes rule," stated Marta Fabianova of the Interior Ministry's press department. Sterner penalties are to apply also to drivers who will be repeatedly caught speeding. Exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h within city limits and more than 60 km/h outside city limits will count as a serious misdemeanour under the three-strikes rule, too.
