Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová said that the Ukrainian town of Bucha, from where reports of dozens of civilians killed and mass graves are coming after the withdrawal of Russian forces, is a symbol of the horror in Ukraine. Up to 340 bodies have so far been found in the Ukrainian town of Bucha, apparently the result of a "massacre" perpetrated by Russian troops, wrote the DPA news agency reported this on Monday, citing information from the Ukrainska Pravda (UP) daily.
Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger condemned the killing in the town, stressing that the actions of Russian soldiers in Ukraine will be strictly punished by the international community.
Vice-chair of the Slovak Parliamentary Human Rights Committee Peter Pollák signalled that he wants to convene a special committee session over the events in Bucha. Furthermore, Pollák plans to summon Russian Ambassador to Slovakia Igor Bratchikov to the session. "I have many questions. I want to know how representatives of the Russian Federation intend to explain the atrocities committed on Ukrainian civilians. These people were deprived of their human rights, including the most basic one - the right to life," reads Pollak's statement.
Ukrainian and Western leaders reacted with outrage to these discoveries. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy directly accused Moscow of killing the civilians. Russia has denied any accusations, maintaining that the footage was staged by Kiev.
