The death rate in Slovakia fell in February, but the number of deaths related to COVID-19 increased, the Statistics Office reported. In total, nearly 4,900 people died in February, including 539 who succumbed to COVID-19, the third most common cause of death in Slovakia in the month. "In January and February 2022, the number of people who died dropped by more than 3,000 when compared to the same period in 2021, when the pandemic was at its peak. A year ago, the excess mortality rate was at around 70%, while in January of this year it dropped to 7%, and in February it almost matched pre-pandemic levels," said Zuzana Podmanická, head of the Statistics Office's population department. The most common causes of death in February were diseases of the circulatory system, which accounted for 45% of deaths, and cancer-related causes, which made up 19% of the total.
